I've been having a good time with DuoLingo's Japanese course. I already knew some so the beginning stuff introducing kana was all easy, but I'm starting to get to where it's drilling a few kanji into my head. Free app, or pay to remove ads.
Kirin - It's good at an entry level, but that's pretty much it :)
Watch GameCenter CX in Japanese. You'll recognize stuff due to it being videogames and a lot of the words and terms repeat, plus they banter pretty simply with each other about the video games and have different segments that also repeat so you get the terms there too.

there's some subbed stuff but really it's video games and older people playing them, so it's not jive
Madsen - Yeah, that makes sense. I haven't gotten to the end of any of their courses, but there's obvious limits to the format it uses.
