The state of the fungus..

2022-01-17

So, the possible NFT'ing of a cute ninja clan really got people talking. Happy about that. Many different opinions and beliefs, nice to see that we can all talk civil even if we don't have the same opinions on a theme :)

Some thought on all this..

People keep calling NFT's a pyramid scheme, but what they're describing is actually just your regular pump and dump/build hype/Capitalism/FOMO. They say this is super bad, but it would be interested to see if you're thinking the same way about all aspects of your life?

The environmental impact, is a valid point.
But, I have a feeling that the people using that as an argument don't do SHIT to help the environment/earth, so blaming their hate for NFT's (of their FOMO) on that, is just stupid. Or what do you say? I would understand if you use that argument if you actually gave a damn, but I know you don't, unless it's convenient for you and your day to day lifestyle. No? It's like pointing at something that wouldn't effect you/you would never use/come in contact with anyways, and say "I WOULD NEVER EAT/DO/PARTICIPATE IN THAT", since, yes, you never would.. but you're using it as a reason to look better/feel better about yourself/validate? Maybe, maybe not, who knows.

Me, I don't buy anything plastic unless there's no other option, only eat local and organic, only buy used and re-used, don't over costume, only own minimal pieces of clothing etc etc.. and I have no problem with the NFT energy consumption, since I know it will lead to more efficient ways of doing it in the future and the technology will lead to something else.

Someone said something about using bullshit buzzword to help sell stuff.
Well, using bullshit buzzwords MIGHT probably help with the sales, which would be beneficial since I do need to make money like everyone else to pay bills.

People who don't support the comic monetary anyways, I find it a little bit arrogant when they are threatening to stop reading if we do NFT's. If we do NFT's, I'll be sad to see you go.. truly, since I want to make people smile, not get upset. But, if said NFT's actually ended up generate a small extra push of income, I would think about those people when I pay my bills, can buy more time to spend on the comic and so on, since you probably won't.

The odds of us doing NFT's are slim anyways, mostly since I have no idea on how to do the things I'd like to do.. and don't have the technical knowledge needed.

Besides, this comic is just me doing jokes I find funny, readers or not. I mean, the comic used to have like 70k readers per day, and now it's like maybe 5% of that.. but I'll still keep doing it :)

Please let me know if you feel like I'm all in the wrong here.

The way I see it, what does selling Cute Ninja NFTs get *you* as opposed to to selling unique art. More uptake because of the current hype mentality? From the sounds of it, very little profit is going to the original artists, so I don't see much value for someone to get into it now as an artist.

As a technical/cryptography minded person, my opinion is that it's scams all the way down. But, the creator of Signal is more eloquent than me: https://moxie.org/2022/01/07/web3-first-impressions.html

By Mr.Madsen

@Skjie - It gives me a platform, I think that's the biggest reason. And yes, probably more uptake. It'll also be fscking awesome if people owned their own ninja instead of some anonymous silly Ape :) Also, thanks for the link, really interesting read :)

By Fred

"It'll also be fscking awesome if people owned their own ninja"
but the won't, like they do not own the apes.
All they have is a "receipt that says they own it": https://www.monalisamania.com/what-is-an-nft-explained-in-a-somewhat-delirious-but-quite-correct-way-thanks-to-the-mona-lisa/
and Moxie's NFT poop emoji is a good example of what that means

By Fred

also, have you factored in you monetary consideration the need to "mint" each image you want to sell? you have to pay ~$100 per image to obtain the permission to try and sell it.
and most of that stuff is not selling.

By Mr.Madsen

@Fred - Well, even tho I enjoyed Moxie's experiment, but that sense, no one ever owns anything. You have a receipt? Sucks to be you, I have it in my hand, so I own it. No? :). If you buy a ninja, it is yours, and you have proof, and I can attest to it too.. but again, nothing means anything with the direction you're taking things :)

And no, no gas fees on openSea (with polygon) :) https://opensea.io/gas-free

I was a big fan of LG back in the day and was really pleased when it unexpectedly came back. But I'll be going now. I hope you don't lose too much money doing this.

By Mr.Madsen

@Gothblin - Thanks! :)
But, Nothing has been done yet :)

This is just one person's opinion so make of it what you will (but I'm someone who bought one of the original ninja tees back in the day and wore it so thoroughly that the screen printing, good quality as it was, eventually fell apart - are the ones on the store currently still the same screen printing? If so I'll buy a new one!)...

You'll get lots of groaning from people about NFTs because it's like when a friend gets into Amway: suddenly it's all they want to talk about, because to be successful in it requires relentlessly advertising it to everyone they come into contact with and getting them into it too (as it's not about what's being sold, it's about getting other people to sell it too).

So when someone says they're going to do NFTs, people who've already been exposed to it think "oh damn, now we're going to have to listen to this person talking about NFTs constantly for the next several months until they realise it was a waste of time because they didn't have an existing fanbase of NFT zombies to sell to". The people making money from NFTs are the ones who already have a large following of people also into the grift that they can hype their releases to, who in turn will hype it to others so they can turn a profit. It's nothing to do with the art, it's just about finding someone to sell it to again. yes, it's a pump and dump, which is also bad because it's exploiting people.

Your fans are probably mostly people from the early web who've already seen this before and are already tired of hearing about it. No one is trying to say you don't deserve to make a living! I'm sure we all want to see you do what you love and be successful with it! It's just that Little Gamers means fun comics about games and web dev and life, not pushing the digital equivalent of an Amway scheme. The pertinent and relatable comics (that your fans might expect to eviscerate NFTs as a dumb con) is why you got your following and in turn why people like the ninjas and wanted shirts and stuff. I'm not sure it works the other way around, trying to use NFTs to get a following for the comics, because the people into NFTs don't care about the art at all. Just my 2 yen!

By Mr.Madsen

@Doodz
Not the same screen printing I'm afraid.. it's a printer-version I think, so not even close to the awesomeness that we used to have 15 years ago :(

Amway.. fuck damn.. OK, point taken.

Thanks for the write up, this actually make so much sense, and I've never looked at it like this :)

IF it ever turns into NFTing, there will be an initial push like with everything else ("WE HAVE A NEW BOOK!" etc), but then that's pretty much it.. it's more for people if they want it and if they don't they don't.. no pushing down people's throats :)

We'll see, we'll see :)

By Erik

That's one way to look at it...

My environment take is that the nft doesn't add anything other than hype (and energy cost). And I actually give a damn and do lots of damns for the environment irl. But even if I didn't, everything saved is something saved, no?

The thing is... It *is* like a receipt. Or maybe more like a sales contract you keep a copy of. As you say: it proves the buyer owns it. And you as seller have something to attest to it.
What's the difference with a receipt by email? :)
Achieves the exact same thing, without the hype around it. I think. Maybe.

Or maybe with old fashioned receipts/sales documents, the ninja will by definition, like old fashion, kill me in my sleep. Again. Hadn't considered that. If so, I vote nft. If not, I don't.

By Thad

Honestly, I wouldn't even go near the "I won't read this anymore if you do it" because like you said if I'm not gonna buy one why should I give a shit.

I think Doodz sorta hit the nail on the head. NFT Bros/Crypto Accounts/Elon Musk Stans.... the three groups online that are basically one big circle of not shutting the fuck up :)

Do what you want but please don't become that

By Mo

I think its the whole concept of trusting a receipt, e-mail or Certificate. Anything can be manipulated (with different effort) and can loose its value. IN the end it's a Hype cause enough people believe in it. Like with art, money, and most financial products, just on a very small scale.

I think, in the end the small parts of the tech (and the hype), that are sustainable and usable might survive.

By Mr.Madsen

I agree with the above :)

By Qls

A lot of these comments sound like an abusive relationship: "If you do THIS, I'm leaving you." Don't you think?

I mean, if you don't know about NFT, you're free to keep reading and NOT buy anything, I don't understand where all the ultimatums are coming from.

By Mr.Madsen

@Qls - Me neither :-/

By povej

Use whatever excuse you want. More educated people than you dipshits have tried to justify why they fell for this shit and failed.

Anyone that supports you in any way now is just a moron.

By Mr.Madsen

@povej - How can I fail when I have no ambitions? :o
