tbh, the last forum was a pain in the ass to browse, it felt more like a guestbook than a forum.
a phpbb/vbulltetin forum where everything is familiar would probably be the way to get people to sign up and post.

as for features you don't want, can't they be disabled?

phpBB3 doesn't support HTML in posts, this kind of sucks... on the other hand, that's what got us in trouble in the first forum wasn't it?
The thing is; the last forum was basically empty, I remember checking it every other day and there was maybe one new post. In the end there was no activity for weeks! Don't get me wrong I'm all for bringing the forum back, the question is if we really need it.

Vanillla is pretty but it's extremely feature-light. Your best bet in the FOSS space is phpBB3. I've been using it a lot lately; since version 3.0.6 it's got most everything people expect from a forum system, and it surpasses Simple Machines in terms of ease of use (if not outright power).

If you're going the commercial route I'd suggest Invision Power Board (IPB). It's prettier than vBulletin, easier to customize, and has a more flexible mod system.
