Hey there good citizens. I’m thinking of bringing back the forums. Unfortunately we lost all the old data in the crash, including accounts and such but that leaves us open to choose any forum platform we like. I’m thinking vanilla, anyone have a better suggestion?

vBulletin is by FAR the best, however it isn’t free.

Vanillla is pretty but it’s extremely feature-light. Your best bet in the FOSS space is phpBB3. I’ve been using it a lot lately; since version 3.0.6 it’s got most everything people expect from a forum system, and it surpasses Simple Machines in terms of ease of use (if not outright power).

If you’re going the commercial route I’d suggest Invision Power Board (IPB). It’s prettier than vBulletin, easier to customize, and has a more flexible mod system.

YAY FORUMS! Lets just hope most of the previous residents are still kicking about.

Yeah but do we need all these features? At leas with vanilla i can plugin whatever we need as we go along. Also, it’s pretty, and we like pretty ;)

phpBB3 doesn’t support HTML in posts, this kind of sucks… on the other hand, that’s what got us in trouble in the first forum wasn’t it?
The thing is; the last forum was basically empty, I remember checking it every other day and there was maybe one new post. In the end there was no activity for weeks! Don’t get me wrong I’m all for bringing the forum back, the question is if we really need it.

bring the old old one back. the one before the one with noone in :). that was better. just make it hackproof this time :D

tbh, the last forum was a pain in the ass to browse, it felt more like a guestbook than a forum.
a phpbb/vbulltetin forum where everything is familiar would probably be the way to get people to sign up and post.

as for features you don’t want, can’t they be disabled?
