I think the pictures are mostly effective for very young kids who see their parents smoking and are impressionable enough to only see things as black and white. Smoke, like your dad, and you’ll end up with dirty lungs. If you don’t, you won’t.
Unfortunately many people forget about all that when the hot girl at the party asks if you’d like to have a cigarette with her. Next thing you know you’re justifying smoking by listing the many other things that’ll likely get you first…

Or that could just be me lol.

Efforts to lower the amount of people smoking are atrociously obnoxious and dependant on the absolute ignorance of the people involved. They are blatantly telling smokers “Hey, we think you are F*cking stupid and haven’t realised your slowly killing yourself in a way that should be deemed inhumane and is expensive on our health care system. So for the hundred billionth time here’s a picture of what your doing to yourself in case you hadn’t noticed like the beligerent bunt you are.” Education is no longer enough to stop people from smoking. Incentive is required. Like, “We aren’t paying for your stupidity. If you continue to smoke and develop a disease we can directly attribute to your smoking, we are going to make you pay directly for all costs incurred to keep you healthy.” That’ll stop people!

@teh tim: it’s more shock tactics than anything else. Y’know, a sort of “look at what will happen to your lungs you stupid bastard NOW PUT THAT CIGARET DOWN RIGHT NOW! AARRRRGGGHHHH!”
Had that for a few years in the UK. Not that it’s worked one iota. Before that we had generic “smoking kills and does bad stuff to you” messages on the box. My good friend got a carton that read “Smoking lowers sperm count”. His triumphant response: “I fucking TOLD the bitch we weren’t having kids!” I think thats generally the reaction this stuff has. A sort of blasse “oh. look at that.”

nasty pictures on cigarette packs? LOL in case the media has’t noticed yet I think most of us who smoke already know it can cause cancer, what are they doing now catering to the illiterate? I think the people deciding to label the packages that way are some IQ points behind us that smoke…but just for the sake of arguement I wonder if we could convince them to put naked chicks on the other side of the pack in order to avoid and bouts of depression from those who smoke. Get bothered by cancerous lung pic flip it over for some tits to cheer you up ^_^

I believe Ed Byrne had a nice stand-up about these packs with lungs on them. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIoTpY3mw_g ) The question is: How can you tell if those are smoker lungs or healthy longs? It’s repulsive anyway.

And the images on alcoholic fluids, that whould be a hard long and lasting laugh.

We’ve had those images on fag packets for ages and none of them work! Yes i don’t really fancy looking at a guy with a massive discusting tumor on his neck but i do really fancy a cigarrette and i’ve sorta bought the packet already.
